The following tips were written to ease the use of Netscape's
Communicator. Upcoming articles will invariably deal with most, if not all, versions of this browser.
Working Offline
Want to know the easiest way to save online time when using a timed dialup account? The following tips will focus on downloading e-mail, then
reading and replying to your messages offline so as not to tie up the phone line for an extended amount of time.
First of all, connect to your ISP > start Netscape Messenger and retrieve your new messages. Now disconnect. In
Messenger > click File > Offline > Work Offline( some systems will automatically disconnect when clicking Work Offline...you can try it and see ).
Read your messages and then reply to them as you normally would. Your outgoing messages go into a queue for Netscape to send
when you log back on to your ISP. Then when you are done > click File > Offline > Work Online. Netscape should then log back on to your ISP and send any messages in the outgoing queue. You
can then disconnect and go about your surfing or other activities.
========================================================
By default, Netscape will send any unsent messages when you go back to working online. You can change this setting
in your Netscape Preferences by > clicking Edit > Preferences > and select Offline in the Preferences window. The other two options for When Going Online are...Ask Me If I Want To Send My
Unsent Messages...and...Do Not Send My Unsent Messages. If you decide to choose the Do Not Send My Unsent Messages
option, you can send them manually at any time by clicking > File > Send Unsent Messages.
=======================================================
A third feature of offline browsing...also known as synchronizing...targets users connected to a local
area network( LAN ) or wide area network( WAN ) at work or at their place of business. You may inquire to your system's administrator as to
how to use this feature on your messages and folders. The availability of this option differs from system to system.
Temporary Files
Netscape creates temporary files as an archive of your sent and
received messages. If you find that you have a lot of messages still in your in-box or in your trash folder in
Messenger. Go ahead and clean out all unnecessary messages regularly. In Messenger, delete those that you
don't need anymore. Also delete the messages in your Sent folder unless there is a specific reason for keeping them. These are just copies of messages you have sent. When you have deleted
everything that you don't need within Messenger, make sure that you empty the trash folder as well.
Click File > Empty Trash On Local Mail. Then click File > Compact Folders to compress all of your messages and save some hard disk space
in the process.
Also, sometimes Netscape creates a temp file for a particular task, then forgets to delete it. If the steps above don't take care of
the files that you are concerned about...it's probably safe to delete them manually using Windows Explorer. I suggest trying the technique above first.
Preview Your Web Pages
When creating a Web page using Netscape Composer, you should preview your page in a Netscape
window before publishing it to the server. When you make use of the preview, you can make sure that everything is just right before the public sees it.
To preview your page > click File > Browse Page > or click the preview button on your toolbar. The button's picture will look like Netscape's trademark...the golden ship wheel.
Although Composer is a WYSISYG( What You See Is What You Get ) Web page editor...it is always best to do a final preview prior to publishing.
Default Browser?
The problem is...Netscape and IE v.5 do not play well with each other on the same system unless you
assign one as your default browser. It has to do with the way Win95/98 integrates it's networking
features with your browser. Unfortunately...you will have to name one or the other as the default. You needn't have to use Netscape with one ISP and Internet
Explorer with the other, but you can always switch between the two during your online browser session.
Cover Your Tracks
Want to know how to delete the addresses listed in the drop-down bar in Navigator, please read on.
Netscape keeps a record of the last 10 or 20 sites you visited( on the chance that you want to go back to them ). You can easily wipe this list clean if you want to erase all
record of previous sites that you have visited.
Click Edit > Preferences > and select Navigator on the left side of the preferences window. At the bottom of the window you will
see a button that says...Clear Location bar. Go ahead and click it and Netscape asks you for confirmation. Now click
OK and that's it.
To cover your tracks even further, you can wipe Netscape's cache of recently downloaded Web pages and graphics. Expand the
Advanced options in the Preferences window and select Cache > click the Clear Disk Cache button. This may slow you down a bit in your next couple
browsing sessions in Netscape( that cache will need to find new data ). But it will not last long.
Delete Messenger Folders?
Have you tried to delete folders in Communicator with no luck? You can easily make or rename a folder. But, short of reinstalling Communicator, dumping folder material may seems impossible. Also, files can be moved from the folders to the trash
and empty the trash, but the folder stays.
Bear in mind that certain folders in Messenger are vital to it's proper function so you cannot delete them. The Drafts, Templates, Sent, and Unsent Messages
folders will fall under this category. You can delete them...but they will reappear the next time
you start Netscape. Also, you can rename and delete any other folders you create at will. In the instance of
folders for filtering and organizing incoming mail, Netscape will create any folders involved if it doesn't find them.
Any other problems that you have with folders may originate from a corruption of your Netscape program. In this case...reinstalling may
be your only option.
Zip Code Search
You can easily discover what's going on in your town by typing the word...
zip
followed by your zip code in the URL location bar. This, however, does not work for all zip codes...
but it's worth a look anyway.
