Is Your Data Secure?
Take This Quick Inventory Of Your System's Security
-
Run Windows Update.
From the Start Menu in Windows98 or
Windows2000, remember to periodically run the Windows Update feature to make sure you have the latest browser
and system security patches installed.
-
Disable Services.
Under Windows NT, take a peek inside the Services Control Panel to ensure you're running only the services required for system operation.
Innocent-sounding items like Network Monitor can actually be quite the security risk.
-
Check Browser/Internet preferences.
Close your browser holes and tighten IE security setting. Disable cookies, Java, JavaScript and ActiveX controls if you're concerned about
malicious Web Pages (note: this site uses friendly Java!!). Upgrade your browser to 128-bit security while
you're at it. To do so...open IE> choose Help> and then click on the Update Information Link.
-
Empty The Trash.
You threw it away because you no longer needed it. That doesn't
mean that someone else wouldn't mind a peek at it. Keep the Recycle Bin small and clean it out regularly.
-
Get The Latest Virus Definition Updates/Files.
You can't update your Anti-Virus Files often enough (in my humble opinion). Do it once a month.
Weekly if you can and perform full system scans!!
I can't stress Option #4 highly enough!! Just recently, your friendly-Internet-spider-boy, opened an attachment in OutLook Express
that nearly cooled my PC's jets permanantly. Thanks to eBay's© Computer Chat Board and Parpat, a very skilled and adept
computer expert, my machine was restored and no malicious e-mails were sent from my PC. Please be aware that
virus' like Pretty Park, CIH (Chernobyl) and Happy99.Exe are still alive and well...as are many others. It's not always easy to be cool & calm when it's happening to you, folks.
Here are a few Quik-Linx® to get you started
