Installing MS Fax In Win98
Many people were used to the old Win95 fax capability. I have had a few ask me if it can be setup on Win98. Microsoft Fax is also on the Win98 installation CD.

To install, simply put the CD into your CD-Rom drive, click on 'Browse this CD' and find the folder named Tools/OldWin95/Message/Us. Now just run awfax.exe.

Please Note: This utility requires a full MAPI Client in order to function properly, such as Microsoft Exchange, Windows Messaging, Microsoft Exchange Server Client or Outlook ( the full version as 'Express' will not do ).

Turn Off The CD-Rom's Autorun
If you would rather that your CD's not start automatically every time you insert them into your drive, there is a way to turn this feature off.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and click to open the System icon. Click the Device Manager tab and then click the View Devices By Type radio button. Now click the plus ( + ) sign next to the CD-Rom drive, right-click your CD-Rom, choose the Properties button and then the Settings tab. At this point, you can go ahead and uncheck the 'Auto Insert Notification' box and then click OK twice.

Now your CD's will load normally but your CD-Rom drive won't launch them untill you are ready.

Changing The Drive For Virtual Memory
If there is more than one hard drive on your PC, you might want Win98 to use the faster of the drives for it's virtual memory capabilities. Having the faster drive for the virtual memory can speed performance by decreasing the time needed to access temporarily stored info.

To change the setting, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System and then click on the Performance tab, then the Virtual Memory Settings and choose the new drive from the Hard Disk pull-down menu. Now simply finish up by clicking OK.

Create A Startup Floppy Disk
This tip is never too frequent. Having a startup disk hanging around when you need it is pure gold when you're having system trouble. It's the first step towards fixing the system's problem(s). You will need it to get the PC going so that you can run diagnostics.

To create a Win98 startup floppy disk, insert a blank, formatted floppy disk into the A:\ drive and go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs. Then select the Startup Disk tab and choose Create Disk. Follow the instructions and when you are finished, label the disk and put it in a safe place in case you need it later.

Using The Phone Dialer
With your computer connected to the telephone line by your internal modem, you can use Win98 to dial all of your telephone numbers. This means that you may not have to remember a phone number again. The program that makes this happen is called Phone Dialer and it is found in Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Phone Dialer.

When using Phone Dialer, you may save your eight most frequently called numbers by clicking one of the Speed Dial buttons and then entering the name and number. Also, you can use the Phone Dialer to keep a log of all outgoing telephone calls made with the program. To log calls, simply go to Tools > Show Log and it will display the Call Log window. Now choose Log > Options and then check the Incoming Calls check box. The Phone Dialer will keep track of who you called and when.

Set Your Modem For 10 Digit Dialing
Many larger cities are moving from seven-digit to the ten-digit dialing for local calls caused by the huge demand for telephone numbers. If you find your area making this switch ( or if your laptop goes to such places ), then you need to change your machine. It is not difficult to re-configure your dialer.

To begin with, you will need to know the area code that requires the ten-digit dialing. When you find yourself in that area code, go ahead and open your Internet Connection and click on Dial Properties. Now enter the present area code in the 'I Am In This Country / Region' and then click on 'Area Code Rules'. Check the 'Always Dial The Area Code' box in the 'When Calling Within My Area Code' section and then click on OK twice.

Your Clipboard And Ram
Anytime that you are doing work that requires cutting large files to your Clipboard, you need to remember to purge the Clipboard after you finish your work by copying something small to it.

The Clipboard is stored in Ram and if it's full of a massive file, such as an image file or a captured web page, it can make your system act more than a little sluggish. Try typing a few letters into a text editor ( Notepad will do ) and cut them to the Clipboard to free up that much-needed memory.

Delete Documents In One Step
If you are absolutely, without a doubt sure that you wish to get rid of a file, then you can delete it from your PC in one single step...without moving it to the Recycle Bin first.

To do so, simply select the file and press Shift-Delete. You will need to confirm this step by pressing Enter in the following dialog box but, then again, you won't have to go to the Recycle Bin to empty it from there.
