Are you finding Windows to be a challenge? There are many utilities and solutions available to make Win98 an easier OS to use. As in previous editions of Win98 Tips & Tricks, I will list a few resources that can help with brief description of each. If there is no link provided in the description, then a trial / demo can be found at zdnet.com or pcworld.com.
Win98 won't help you when you want to view compressed downloads or certain types of e-mail attachments. Expander allows you to view and decompress formats like Stuffit, uuencoded, ARC, BinHex, MacBinary and .zip, to name a few.
Microsoft has a good track record of notification whenever critical updates such as security patches and system files become available. The Windows Update icon in your Start Menu is the place to go ( and often ) for these.
Upgrades to IE and the service packs that follow enhances several features and often fixes the known problems that arise with each new version. These can also be found at the microsoft.com Web site.
The link below contains many utilities. Some of these overlap the TWEAKUI but also add valuable twists ranging from batch renaming of files to helping conflicting browsers play nice together. My best advice would be to browse the many programs and see which is most user-friendly for you and also meets your immediate needs. Try this site ( my personal favorite ), zdnet.com and enter the words tweak utilities into the Search box.
Not much to explain here. This is a file encryption utility that allows you to keep your files private on a shared PC or in internet applications.
This update to Windows' Accessibility Tools ( while intended for disabled users ) addresses several key performance, stability and compatibility issues. This can be downloaded from microsoft.com also.
Everyone at one time or another will need to transfer files of some kind. The easiest and most user-friendly program
that I have found is WS_FTP which is available as a free download most anywhere.
And are you tired of losing long downloads and having to start anew each time? Try either Download Accelerator or GoZilla. Each of these two programs support
reconnect and more. I recommend them both.
