Virus, Virus Everywhere!!

Welcome to Windows 98 Tips & Tricks!!
Today while I was using the eBay™ Computer Help Board, I posted what I thought should also appear here as well. With all the talk about system failures and virus floating around...more on this topic couldn't hurt!! I hope you have found this series to be helpful in your Computing Adventures. Also, please visit my new site at www.DiskHog.com and have a look. Comments, as always, are welcome and appreciated.
Thank you and be careful out there!!...Spider!

Today is a great day to...

  • Go to Windows Update and check/download, at very least, the Critical Updates.
  • Update your Anti-Virus Definitions and do a total system scan
    (just fer giggles).
  • Clear your cache/temporary Internet files/or use Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Cleanup.
  • Use Disk Defragmenter and Scandisk (set on thorough & automatically fix errors).
  • Have a great day!!!

Shooting star from Sweetness

The eBay™ post above is what inspired this topic. It appears as though the discussion of worms, Trojans and virus can not be hit upon enough. The proliferation of "In The Wild" virus will increase as more people become connected to the Internet. Also, by being a so-called "regular" on the Computer Board I see many users still do not do regular maintenance on their machines. This is vital for healthy and (near) trouble-free computing!!

This is by no means a complete list/source of information but it is a good start.

There is no substitute for being cautious. It's not paranoid to virus-scan ALL e-mail attachments and ALL downloads prior to unpacking/unzipping/installing them. It's called Safe Computing. I sincerely encourage all to practice it...Spider!

Fun Stuff

Full-Screen Explorer Window

You can view any Explorer Window in full-screen. If the window is not currently maximized (i.e. you can see all of it's edges) all you need do is hold down the CTRL key as you click the middle caption button in the windows upper-right hand corner.

If you are ready to hop back to the window that you stated with...Press F11

Still not enough space when you enlarge by the method above??? You can also hide the toolbars too. Right-click a blank area on the menu bar (top of the screen) and select Auto Hide. The menu and button bars will disappear from view and if and when you need them again, move your mouse up to the top edge of the screen and they will slide back into place!!

To "Undo" this option...right-click the menu bar and de-select Auto Hide.
