Mixed Bag Of Tips

Relocate Your Taskbar

Have you ever wished that your Taskbar was located somewhere other than the bottom of the screen? Some former Mac users might prefer it on top. To do this...simply click a blank area of the Taskbar > drag it up to the top of the screen until a gray, dotted outline appears > then release the mouse button. The Taskbar should go right into place.

You can use this same method to move the Taskbar to any other side of the screen as well...or back to where you started from.

Changing Mouse Pointers

Tired of the default arrow that Win95 installs as your mouse pointer? Win95 comes with many more to choose from. To change the mouse pointer, you will need to install the pointers from the installation CD if they aren't already there.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > double-click the Mouse icon. Now click the Pointers tab to view your current choices. Select which pointer that you want to change > click Browse > and a dialog box with pointers appears. You can preview any animated pointer and watch it in the Preview pane. Make your choice of which pointer you wish to use and then click Open. You will need to repeat these steps for each pointer that you want to change > click OK.

Quick Desktop Tip

Without 3rd party programs or a Quick Launch toolbar, quick access to the Desktop in Win95 may be a bit tough. But, there is a way around this obstacle and it's built right into Win95.

Right-click any blank space on the Taskbar > select Minimize All Windows > and instant Desktop!

Win95 Resource Kit

Windows 95 comes with an extensive help file which was designed mainly for administrators. This information really out does the traditional Windows Help by a milestone.

All this information is on the Win95 installation CD. Simply put the CD in the CD-Rom drive > open an Explorer window > find the path D:\Admin\Reskit\helpfile( where D: is the letter designated to the CD-Rom drive ). To get started > double-click win95rk.hlp > browse through the topics as you would in Windows Help.

To go ahead and install the Resource Kit on your PC, copy the win95rk.hlp and win95rk.cnt to your C:\Windows\Help folder. Afterward, create a shortcut to the win95rk.hlp file on your Desktop or Start menu.

Clipbook Installation

Unfortunately, you won't find the Clipbook Viewer in your typical Start > Programs > Accessories menu( or in the Windows Setup tab of the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box. Clipbook is a carryover from the old Windows For Workgroups. The install for it can be found on the Win95 CD.

Put the Windows 95 installation CD into the CD-Rom drive > open an Explorer window > find Other\Clipbook > double-click Clipbrd.exe and the Clipbook Viewer will begin.

You can install the Clipbook Viewer to your PC. With the CD in place, simply open the Control Panel > select Add\Remove Programs > select the Windows Setup tab > click Have Disk > click Browse and then find D:\Other\Clipbook( again, where D:\ is the letter assigned to the CD-Rom drive ). When you find Clipbook.inf on the File Name line > click OK twice > select Clipbook Viewer under Components > then click Install. When installation is completed, you can launch the Clipbook Viewer by selecting Start > Programs > Accessories > Clipbook Viewer.
