Boost Your Modem Speed

In Win95, your modem speed may appear to work well but the reality is that the baud rate for your COM Port won't allow you to reach maximum speed. To maximize your port's speed, simply:

  1. Click Start, Select Settings > Control Panel, and click to open System.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab, and then click on the "+" sign next to Ports ( COM & LPT ).
  3. Select the port your modem uses, click on Properties, and then click the Port Settings tab and then set the Bits per second to 115200 bps. That way, you will not have a somewhat-filter on the Port.
  4. For most modems, you should use Hardware in the Flow Control drop-down menu.
Remember: 115200 bps is the maximum setting for a Standard COM Port. If you have any problems, you can try lowering the setting to a lower value (the next lowest, etc. ).

Trace Internet Routes in Win95

A program called Trace Route is included with Windows 95. Open a DOS window and type tracert location name. The location name may be any IP address or number. An example would be... tracert www.spider-boy.com. The program will trace the route from your ISP to that location...and show you all the computer systems along the way. It's an intesting thing to watch and also useful when you can't seem to connect to a certain site. This will show you if something is out-of-order along the way.

Auto Re-dial?

You can configure Windows 95 to automatically re-dial your dial-up connection by simply...

  1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Select your connection.
  3. From the drop down menu, select Connections > Settings
  4. Check Re-dial and then select the number of times that you want the modem to re-dial ( 2-100 ) and then click OK.
  5. Go ahead and close Dial-up Networking.

Disconnected A Lot?

If you get disconnected on a regular basis, then you may want to try this extra modem setting...

  1. Go to Modems in the Control Panel by route of Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. From Modems go ahead and select Properties and then select the Connection tab...then select Advanced.
  3. In the Extra Settings dialogue box, type in S10=50.

Speed Up Your Connecting Time

This will force your modem to stay connected even without a carrier for up to 5 seconds. Try it. It has worked for me!

To speed up the amount of time it takes for DUN ( Dial-Up Networking ) go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Dial-Up Networking.
  1. Now right-click your connection and choose Properties.
  2. On the Server Types tab, make sure that the check-box for Log on to network is unchecked.
  3. Under Allowed network protocols you need to select only TCP / IP.
