Master Internet Explorer 5

Have you just installed IE 5.0 or just want to take advantage of it's many options? Below are five simple steps that will help you accomplish this task.

1. Turn on the most powerful encryption options: Choose Help, About to see if you have the weak 56-bit encrytion. US and Canadian citizens can download a 128-bit upgrade at Microsoft's Web site.

2. Set your AutoComplete: Unless your computer is locked and secure, choose Tools > Internet Options and then click on the Content tab. Now, go ahead and turn off the option to save passwords automatically.

3. Adjust your Security settings: If you store sensitive data or are worried about rogue ActiveX controls, then choose Tools > Internet Options and use the Custom Level option on the Security tab to disable any features that you deem dangerous.

4. Fine-tune the browser cache & history: If you wish to keep older items in the History list, then go to Tools > Internet Options and choose the General tab. Go ahead and jump up the number of days in the History setting, then click on the Settings button to increase the cache size.

5. Set your Advanced options as well: The Internet Options dialog box includes a long list of technical tweaks on the Advanced tab. If you get puzzled by what an option does, simply click on the question mark button on the title bar, then on the option for a quick explanation

Search Secrets

The search tools in IE 5.0 are quite remarkable, and they will work even better if you customize them first. All you need to do is choose your favorite search engine, then tell IE how you want it to display the results. Then you can view and learn the secrets of instant searches from the address bar.

The steps involved are quite easy...

Step 1. Click on the Search button on IE's toolbar to display the Explorer bar.
Note that IE randomly chooses a search engine from it's built-in list.

Step 2. Click on the Customize button to choose which search engines you want IE to use. You may alternately choose one engine for all searches.

Step 3. Use AutoSearch to search directly from the address bar...just enter a question mark, followed by the search term.

Step 4. If you don't like those results? Click on another to try the next search engine on the list.
